but some people say that "she asked me if i am a teacher" is correct becoz it is a habitual fact and the other sentence is wrong?

she asked me, "Are you a teacher?" what would be the sentence in indirect speech? 1 she asked me if i am a teacher. or 2 she asked me if i was a teacher.
