twain - sometimes! Other times it reinforces lies and ego. Like many things it's a two edged sword that needs to be wielded with intelligence and integrity to have real value.

Suffering predisposes the mind to extremism/escapism, and devoutness is a form of extremism/escapism.
As for "no atheists in foxholes", that's as much fear as suffering!
