It means that the activity was arduous involving weeping and physical labour. It was perhaps excruciating in a physical sense. Sweat equity implies contribution to an activity with direct physical labour.

1, 3 and 4 are all acceptable and correct variants.

Only the second one is idiomatic and correct. The first one may pass if a comma is inserted after french.

Only the first one is grammatically correct. The second one is flawed. It can be something like this :

That is a very expensive dress,WHICH I HAVE to wear at official ceremonies.

Only 2 & 4. The article - a is needed as both command & English are collective nouns.
