The "US Air Force" didn't come into existence until after WW II. Believe it was called the "Army Air Corps" then.

Believe it was a party of sailors from the USS Intrepid that torched the USS Philadelphia not soldiers.

US Air Force wasn't around in '44. It was the Army Air Corps/Army Air Forces. US Air Force became a service on September 18, 1947.
