commiseration

(noun) A feeling of sympathy and sorrow for the misfortunes of others.

Synonyms: pathos, pity, ruth

Usage: Tushin's large, kind, intelligent eyes were fixed with sympathy and commiseration on Rostov, who saw that Tushin with his whole heart wished to help him but could not.

Wow! You're doing really quick work there Daemon. "Commiseration" becomes the word of the day a mere five and half hours after JJ posts it ("mercy -- commiseration") in this game thread.
