Well, yes.
thar is from Iceland, and of course the people of the Isles at least (if not mainland Scotland, so much) have strong ties.

Happy Days to all Icelandic people - and especially Thar and his family.

FAUX PAS of the week: -

The other day I was at the pub my son manages when a customer gave the new barman a hard time. The kid seemed nonplussed and didn't know what to say so I asked him afterwards if he had ever worked in a bar before.

"I've spent the last few years working in Iceland" he replied.
"Ah. Then you'll notice a big difference between the clientel in a bar, as compared to retail situations."

Now he looked at ME nonplussed.

It took a few moments before, turning bright red, I realised he meant he'd been managing a bar in the country of Iceland for a few years.
NOT stacking the shelves in the chain-store "Iceland" which sells cut-price frozen food!!

It is a great picture. Snorri Sturluson & the Icelandic language obviously weren't Iceland's only influence on Tolkien. What a lovely little pointy Hobbit-hole.

"Lofsöngur" ("Hymn"), also known as "Ó Guð vors lands" ("O, God of Our Land"), is the national anthem of Iceland.
If you read it carefully you can find a lot of common words with English.

Ó, guð vors lands! Ó, lands vors guð!
Vér lofum þitt heilaga, heilaga nafn!
Úr sólkerfum himnanna hnýta þér krans
þínir herskarar, tímanna safn.
Fyrir þér er einn dagur sem þúsund ár,
og þúsund ár dagur, ei meir;
eitt eilífðar smáblóm með titrandi tár,
sem tilbiður guð sinn og deyr.
Íslands þúsund ár,
Íslands þúsund ár!
eitt eilífðar smáblóm með titrandi tár,
sem tilbiður guð sinn og deyr.

Ó guð, ó guð! Vér föllum fram
og fórnum þér brennandi, brennandi sál,
guð faðir, vor drottinn frá kyni til kyns,
og vér kvökum vort helgasta mál.
Vér kvökum og þökkum í þúsund ár,
því þú ert vort einasta skjól.
Vér kvökum og þökkum með titrandi tár,
því þú tilbjóst vort forlagahjól.
Íslands þúsund ár,
Íslands þúsund ár!
Voru morgunsins húmköldu, hrynjandi tár,
sem hitna við skínandi sól.

Ó, guð vors lands! Ó, lands vors guð!
Vér lifum sem blaktandi, blaktandi strá.
Vér deyjum, ef þú ert ei ljós það og líf,
sem að lyftir oss duftinu frá.
Ó, vert þú hvern morgun vort ljúfasta líf,
vor leiðtogi í daganna þraut
og á kvöldin vor himneska hvíld og vor hlíf
og vor hertogi á þjóðlífsins braut.
Íslands þúsund ár,
Íslands þúsund ár!
verði gróandi þjóðlíf með þverrandi tár,
sem þroskast á guðsríkis braut.

There are more than 7,000,000,000 human beings.

Only a tiny fraction have the good fortune to live in a country like Iceland: incredibly beautiful and populated by orderly, intelligent, peaceful people who share the same cultural values.

Happy, happy National Day.

You Icelanders are so fortunate!

Hey, I haven't seen this thread before.
Nice sentiments, folks. Thanks Romany and all.

JJ
Beautiful pics, hope he had a great time!

I was just checking for a suitable place to post something without starting a new thread.

Icelandic football team just beat Holland. AGAIN!
Only 1-0 this time. Last time was 2-0.
I mean, what is going on here?
There is no professional league in Iceland, the star players are not superstars like Dutch players. Goal scorer Gylfi Þór Sigurðsson plays for Swansea City.

The team topping the group, most of whom you will never have heard of:

Hannes Þór Halldórsson, Birkir Már Sævarsson, Kári Árnason, Ragnar Sigurðsson, Ari Freyr Skúlason, Jón Daði Böðvarsson, Gylfi Þór Sigurðsson, Aron Einar Gunnarsson, Birkir Bjarnason, Jóhann Berg Guðmundsson, Kolbeinn Sigþórsson

Subs Alfreð Finnbogason, Ólafur Ingi Skúlason, Eiður Smári Guðjohnsen.
Not Used: Ögmundur Kristinsson , Hallgrímur Jónasson, Kristinn Jónsson, Sölvi Ottesen, Rúnar Már Sigurjónsson, Theódór Elmar Bjarnason, Rúrik Gíslason, Viðar Örn Kjartansson, Gunnleifur Gunnleifsson.

Oops, forgot the managers - Lars Lagerbäck (Swedish) and Heimir Hallgrímsson.

Now just beat Kazakhstan again and they qualify for the Euros! First time ever qualified for anything.
I don't care much about football, but I have to acknowledge what these guys are doing. It is not a fluke, it is consistently playing way out of their league, pardon the pun.
