In the game section of the forum I came across the sentence 'The gag reflex is a difficult one to overcome'. For this answer, question asked was 'Were you practicing?'.

Though I looked up 'gag' in TFD, I didn't get the meaning in the context. Can somebody please elaborate?

If you gag, you experience a regurgitative spasm in the throat, as from revulsion to a food or smell or in reflexive response to an introduced object.

The gag reflex is what causes this.

As Tuna explained, to "gag" is to choke, or to begin to vomit. If something hits the very back of our tongue and throat we start to vomit. That's why some people put their finger down their mouth if they are unwell - they make the "gag reflex" come into action so they can vomit up whatever is making them feel sick.(Ugh!)

You can achieve the same result with a badly told joke.

Hi,

according to my information the gag reflex is when a meal you have eaten returns to your throat into your mouth.
in the medicine it is called gastroesofageal reflux.

Antonia -

Yes indeed, gastroesofagal reflux is a medical condition.

However, the actual "reflex" is that automatic process - which can be manipulated by people to bring about vomiting: by bullemics, people who have had too much to drink; or kids who want a day off school!

to Romany:

thanx for answer.
reflux and reflex are very similar words and not only in writing form but also in the meaning- core of the word.

latin language used in medicine has similar words as some or a lot of international words.

international words are similar in various languages or have similar word core.

I'm afraid people here weren't completely honest with you.
This joke refers to oral sex. Gag reflex is an urge to vomit when you disturb the area that is responsible for that reflex in your throat. So the punch line means "have you been sucking a lot of dicks?".
You're welcome.

Well, Dark Soul, I'm afraid I had no idea there was a joke or any back-story behind the query. I simply answered the OP at face value.

I take it a bit hard that this has been seen as 'dishonesty'. Had full context been given, a fuller answer could also have been given.

So:- sorry Roops. I think Tuna was also unaware that the query carried the context D.S. has now explained.

NP, Romany - I was just kidding anyway. I know it takes a spoiled mind, like mine, to recognise that kind of joke on a dime.

My mind does not automatically go to oral sex when people ask what 'gagging' means. However, my answer, like yours, was factual and would cover the situation apparently referred to, so it was puerile to say we weren't honest.

Tunaafi, that's was exactly what I was going for :D
Although I was really surprised no one guessed the context of these lines - the answer to the statement leaves no room for other interpretations.

Sorry for being late. As I said, I came across this word in the game section (A&Q) of the forum.
A:...The gag reflex is a difficult one to overcome.
Q: Were you practicing?
The question posed was applauded, so this aroused my curiosity.

The link is given below.http://forum.thefreedictionary.com/postsm672746_A-and-Q.aspx#672746.

Hope this helps.

OK. Roops,

Went and had a look at the thread and Dark Soul's answer was correct.

We have explained (I hope) what the gag reflex is. However, in the context in which it was used it was indeed a reference to oral sex (fellatio).

In the Games section people play about with words, meanings and nuance. It can be very confusing to an ESL learner as the literal meanings to words are not, in this instance, used. People are playing around with meanings. Pretty tricky!
