Too much mercy...often resulted in further crimes which were fatal to innocent victims who need not have been victims if justice had been put first and mercy second.

And a man who inflicts an injury upon his fellow man just as he did, so shall be done to him [namely,] fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth. Just as he inflicted an injury upon a person, so shall it be inflicted upon him. Old Testament

We ordained therein for them: "Life for life, eye for eye, nose for nose, ear for ear, tooth for tooth, and wounds equal for equal." But if any one remits the retaliation by way of charity, it is an act of atonement for himself. Quran

"You have heard the law that says the punishment must match the injury: 'An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth. But I say, do not resist an evil person! If someone slaps you on the right cheek, offer the other cheek also.' New Testament

I respectfully disagree with the statement. Justice has been put first way too much, resulting in incarceration of non-whites in America. This sentiment of putting justice first is taken to extremes in mistaken judgement by the police resulting in killing of non-whites resulting in breakdown of civil societies - on display in way too painful and brutal ways in towns across America every few months, as if routine. Forget about mercy. The humans in those could care less for mercy. Need is that of empathy, compassion, understanding. Understanding that they do not have places you buy simplest of things -fresh fruit, fresh vegetables a helth care facility in neighborhood where a broken arm of a son, a cough or a sniffl of a precious daughter and so and so forth can be taken care of. They are yearning for these, they are crying for these. However the irony comes when even if those are accessible they do not have money to avail these. That begs a cry towards all of us as a society to provide education, jobs - a way to boost self-respect, self-worth. You see. then, that we do not have to pay heed to what Ms. Christie's admonishing of "putting justice" first. What does anyone think?

Think carefully before asking for justice. Mercy might be safer.

I love the Lincoln quote, but she's talking about "too much mercy" resulting in further harm. Justice is hard to apply justly, and we often get it wrong, but that doesn't mean we should abandon the notion in favor of mercy. Mercy has its place and purpose, but it's a lot easier to discuss as a noble virtue when you're not the victim.

There is no mercy in the computer data processing & storage age. All you've done is remembered forever and affects you.

The key to the quote is "too much". When justice suffers due to
an imbalance of mercy then victims become a reality , just like she said.
Justice is served when there is a proper balance of mercy and justice .
They are both needed for all of our sakes.

Many offenders released on parole, commit heinous crimes. This is what Mrs. Christie must have meant.

This quote in context from : HALLOWEEN PARTY (1969) - CHAPTER 14 -

Children of seven, of nine and so on, and it was often difficult to know how to dispose of
these natural, it seemed, young criminals who came before the juvenile courts. Excuses had
to be brought for them. Broken homes. Negligent and unsuitable parents. But the people
who spoke the most vehemently for them, the people who sought to bring forth every
excuse for them, were usually the type of Rowena Drake. A stern and censorious woman,
except in such cases.

For himself, Poirot did not agree. He was a man who thought first always of justice. He was
suspicious, had always been suspicious, of mercy - too much mercy, that is to say. Too
much mercy, as he knew from former experience both in Belgium and this country, often
resulted in further crimes which were fatal to innocent victims who need not have been
victims if justice had been put first and mercy second.

"I see," said Poirot. "I see."

Thank you, I know of this and agree that this is a tough one and that mercy must be doled out very thoughtfully and heartfelt.
Evaluation of the description of crimes would be well investigated and perhaps changed.

I think understanding is much more important than both mercy AND Justice.

Administer justice, but show mercy and compassion. I could not live if justice could not be served, but , on the other hand, I could not live with
ONLY justice without understanding, mercy, and compassion.
