***** NOT A TEACHER *****

I have just learned a word that I never knew existed in American English.

While watching a television interview today, I discovered that any one of these sentences is correct:

1. Ms. Florence Nightingale is one of my heroes.

2. Ms. Florence Nightingale is one of my heroines.

3. Ms. Florence Nightingale is one of my sheroes.

Since this is the sacrosanct "Vocabulary" forum, not the "Culture" forum, I shan't express any opinion.

Well, 'correct' may be a vague term here.
This looks like something along the lines of 'herstory' = except it looks like someone wanted to demasculinise 'hero' but didn't realise there was already the word 'heroine'. d'oh!

Language is there to be played with, but when it just shows your own ignorance, it does seem a bit daft!

On the other hand, maybe they didn't want people to think they heated her up in a spoon and injected her into their veins. Brick wall

The correct is heroine, as it comes from the Ancient Greek "heroíne" (compare Modern Greek "iroída") just how hero comes from "héros" (compare Modern Greek "íroas").

But, evidently, the word heroine isn't pheministikí enough so they made up their own word. Ehh.

Ugh!

So I looked it up and it doesn't appear to be an actual neologism. It's been the "quirky" title of a number of blogs and private societies: a kind of equivalent of those Hairdressers who call themselves "A Cut Above" or any other wordplay.

There's no evidence to suggest this is a valid newly-coined word: merely (yet another) social media reference. (I see the users of this word as the kinds of people who would make air quotes when they said it!)

It's not just a pun -- it's a bad pun.

Not to beat about the bush - I'd say it's simply incorrect.

Thank you, everyone, for your comments.

1. The gentleman who said this word is considered to be an intellectual.

2. At the end of the interview, he smiled at the female interviewer and said, "You are one of my sheroes."

3. She thanked him with a chuckle.

4. They both seem rather self-conscious regarding his use of that word.
