Foot Binding

Foot binding originated during the Tang Dynasty (618-907) in the wealthiest parts of China. By the end of the practice's thousand-year history, it had spread to all classes and was viewed as a status symbol. Young girls' feet were wrapped in tight bandages that restricted growth, causing breakage and deformity. Most often, the men that foot binding was intended to impress would never see the woman's bare feet, as they were concealed within tiny "lotus shoes." When and why did the practice end? More...

Reminds me of the plate-lipped women of tribal Africa. I wonder if part of the motive is to make her look less attractive to rival males.

I have always thought they did this to women to keep them from being able to run away. Disgusting.

In 1949 the Communists did at least something good to ban this senseless male chauvinism dominated cultures - in this particular culture foot-binding - in other cultures other nastiness done to women.

Only part of the reason, but the truth is that there are both females and males who suffer from lack of self-control when it comes to sexual libido. Such women and men just can't stop themselves from mating like animals.

Creating deformities by breaking the bones is done by callous Schnorrer-mafias in certain countries. It is quite flabbergasting that the generally mild Chinese would indulge in such a harsh practice. In any case it seems that any practice which is unnatural, drudgery and evolutionary detrimental is bound to vanish sooner or later.

Foot binding also fostered the dominance of men over women. Since it was difficult for a woman to walk with bound feet -- the farthest she could walk was 3 or 4 miles (4.8 to 6.4 kilometers) -- Chinese women never strayed far from home, nor had much contact with others outside their villages. This made them more conservative and more willing to obey their husbands. Their diminished mobility virtually ensured they couldn't have extramarital affairs, or run away to escape a beating when their husbands were displeased. As foot binding became entrenched during the Song dynasty (960-1279), education for women was strictly curtailed and independent property rights outlawed [sources: Evans, Ross, Holman].

This was a really "sick" and stupid way to treat women in China, similar to genital mutilation still preformed in some society's.

I think the same way Pedro thinks only those women motive is to make them feel more of a classy woman. The smaller their feet are, the better they feel.

I think the lesson is you can't hold the butterfly prisoner forever. It must fly and it will fly for freedom. All sorts of things... The feet are made for walking. They must walk and they will walk. The mouth is made for talking. It must talk. And it will talk. A woman is a person, with feelings and emotions. She was made yo live life to the same capacity as man. She must live and she will live.

So your dog broke off the shackles and chose freedom huh?...

How about that, huh?Anxious
