Absorbent vs Adsorbent. Options

I read a news story about mopping up the mexico oil spill by hair.Two words used in the the news story confused me one was absorbent and another was adsorbent.Could you explain me the difference between these two words.

When something is absorbed, it moves inside inside the object doing the absorbing. This is like a sponge soaking-up water.

When something is adsorbed, it fastens onto the surface of the object adsorbing. This is how the charcoal in a carbon water-filter works.

These are both physical, not chemical, processes.
