Freedom is the the right to choose, carefully, without limiting other's freedom. Without limiting other's freedom one should have the right to live as one please.

Emerson's definition of freedom is troubling to me. It is not really freedom. Even authoritarian and fascist regime can claim everyone have their freedom according to this definition.

We can choose to live as we please if one wants a momentary happiness. It's all up to us whether we choose easy and fun things/ways or something tough to "fulfill our potential". I definitely believe that we should use our free will wisely to achieve lasting satisfaction and happiness, not transient ones.
I admit it's not always easy to make a right decision, though.
And, yes, sometimes it's also necessary to please ourselves as far as it does not hurt others or impinge on their life, right, freedom, etc.

I usually hate quoting somebody else when discussing a quote but I couldn't help it. This was always one of my favorite movie speaches.

"You want free speech? Let's see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who's standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours. You want to claim this land as the land of the free? Then the symbol of your country can't just be a flag; the symbol also has to be one of its citizens exercising his right to burn that flag in protest. "The right to find how we ought to live in order to fulfill our potential" is a nice sentiment, but only in the presence of common sense, good faith,
and respect for the identical right of the next person.
