First Genetically Modified Apple Approved in US

The US Department of Agriculture has approved America's first genetically modified apple—a variety engineered not to turn brown when bruised or sliced. Scientists achieved this effect by turning off a particular gene. Although it will be several years before these apples are sold to the public, they have already sparked a backlash from critics, who say that more human studies should be conducted before genetically modified organisms are widely sold. Many pharmaceutical products which were believed to be harmless, proved in fact to be teratogenic or otherwise hazardous. What if these GM apples are mutagenic? It may become apparent only after decades/generations!

I am strongly against GM products and would not like to use them. I hope they won't kill people, but think they may be potentially dangerous. At least, such products, if allowed, should be marked/labelled as genetically modified. Some may not care, but I do not want to be a guinea pig.

If you didn't mess with mother nature most of the fruit and veg you buy would be rotten before it got to the supermarket.

I think the danger lies firstly in who is doing this modifications and why. We are all aware of what Monsanto has been doing to modification of food supplies in an effort to control the worlds supply of food. This seems to follow the same pattern. One country or one company cannot be allowed to control any food source. Scary stuff.

Humans have been genetically modifying food since we first began growing crops. Until the last century, we did it by cross-pollinating plants to get the desired results.

Now, we have the ability to manipulate the genes themselves rather than pollinating to get what we want. To rework an old adage, both the scientist and the layperson eat from the same field. I don't think scientists have any desire to poison themselves, or their families.

Whistle Evil!

Think Grow your own apple nursery, and don't buy the GM apples. Boycott the scientific evil!

This very sick, yes sick process must be held id check as the long term effects should first be tested then re-tested to insure that there will NEVER be any negative effects upon the public; ya, good luck with that on, Freddie-boy......

This situation of advance of genetics in our cotidianity is a reality that we cannot turn back.
An advance: when you have the opportunity of have a choice, choose the fruits and vegetables, and all the natural food ;) except the transgenics hahaha

We are all already GMO'd by nature.

Change is always scary.

Thank you walirlan. We are the best at a lot of things but not all things. Genetically modified fruits, vegetables and grains have the potential to eliminate the the use of harmful pesticides and herbicides that slowly poison the our land and our water supply and eventually our bodies. Do you remember how traces of DDT were found in the blood samples of humans and farm animals. Well, the the petrochemical industry has found many replacements for DDT which are supposedly not harmful to our environment and bodies. Do you like your food grown with petrochemicals. I think not. I realize the apple gene thing is a is simply to make apple look more appetizing but think of the other possibilities, perhaps insect and disease resistance without the use of petrochemicals. It is known that small traces of petrochemicals cause cancer and genetic malfunction in humans.
