What Is Organic Food?Growing health consciousness has caused organic food to skyrocket in popularity. Proponents of organic farming claim that it yields more nutritious, safer, and tastier food because it is not prepared with the synthetically compounded fertilizers, pesticides, hormones, medicated feed, and chemicals that are often used in food processing. Food whose ingredients are at least 95% organic by weight may carry the "USDA ORGANIC" label. Who is credited with coining the term "organic farming"? More...

After reading the article, I am not convinced. I have a friend who is an apiarist and in his humble opinion, there is no such thing as organic honey. Yes some bees might be located away from farms that use chemical and other pesticides but particles fly around and do not respect property boundaries. I would think the same applies to vegetables, meats, etc. It must be possible to minimize exposure to 'nasties' but to proclain 100% organic, I have serious doubts.

Well written piece of mainstream food conglomerate propaganda that conveniently leaves out the most damning facts and evidence. Monsanto would be proud of it. Obfuscation and lies are their best weapons.
ellana, the article isn't meant to convince - it's written to _confuse_! And sidestep the real issues.

This is a very one sided article. Corporate farms and companies like Monanto are putting our food supply in grave danger. The insects that are in nature are seen as "pest." To them anything that grows other than their product is a weed. Animals are raised in cruel and unsanitary environments. Most people in the U.S. have no idea what is in their food much less where it comes from. When we become so removed from the reality of the production of food we are in peril. Too bad. Farming to me is a life of spiritualism. I hate the farming conglomerates and I think they are very detrimental to the whole world. When these chemicals are used they drain into the water reservoirs and end up in our wells and in us. I could go on but either it bothers you or you don't care. I guess we will see. The two sides of this argument are firmly grounded in their views. It is impossible to convince either side and the greatest majority don't care.

If it's 95% organic, does that mean it could be 5% pesticides?

Some very good points, Wanderer. I'm in two minds: my aunty died of Pinks disease (mercury poisoning), my friend's father has lead poisoning from working as a mechanic, & how many people are battling mesothelioma from asbestos? Some toxins take a while to make their detrimental impact, by which time it's too late. Remember DDT? Regulation & reporting is needed, but by the same token, so many people are scared off by the notion of 'chemicals'. Water is a chemical, glucose is a chemical. Consumers need to know what is a health risk & what is just hype.

My wife and I have run a community garden for the past several years. It's good exercise and we produce a lot vegetables cheap. One thing I can say is that all our members want to grow organic vegetables until, are you ready for it, they learn that you need to pick off the insect pests by hand and dispatch them yourself. Daily. Oh NOOO... Yekity Yek! Pass the insect spray! Right away!

It's about choice. If I don't want to consume food that has been grown in a manner that I think is not healthy, then it should be possible for businesses to sell me this food. If I want to know where the food originated and how it was grown, then businesses need to do that.
Right now food contamination is legal. It should not be. Right now businesses can lie about how a food was produced. They should not be able to. As long as these things don't change, then we do not have a choice.

Fields full of GMO products are cross contaminating organic fields and the businesses doing the contaminating do so with impunity.
