disciple

(noun) One who embraces and assists in spreading the teachings of another.

Synonyms: adherent

Usage: An avowed disciple of Jonson and his classicism and a greater poet than Fletcher is Robert Herrick, who, indeed, after Shakespeare and Milton, is the finest lyric poet of these two centuries.

disciple (n.) Old English discipul (fem. discipula), Biblical borrowing from Latin discipulus "pupil, student, follower," said to be from discere "to learn" [OED, Watkins], from a reduplicated form of PIE root *dek- "to take, accept" (see decent). But according to Barnhart and Klein, from a lost compound *discipere "to grasp intellectually, analyze thoroughly," from dis- "apart" (see dis-) + capere "to take, take hold of" (see capable). Compare Latin capulus "handle" from capere. Sometimes glossed in Old English by þegn (see thane).

The TFD definition goes a bit beyond the etymology. Merriam Webster also adds the disseminating part.

Disciple refers to one who follows and adopts the teaching of their leader, whereas Apostle refers to one who is sent forth as a representative. Hence the twelve Apostles. All Apostles are also disciples, but not all disciples are Apostles.

A disciple is a follower or a fan of someone. You might consider yourself to be a disciple of your favorite yoga teacher.

The noun disciple comes from the Latin word discipulus, which means "student, learner, or follower."
One of the earliest places disciple showed up was in the Bible, where it means "a follower of Jesus," sometimes specifically one of the twelve Apostles.
It's still used that way in religious speech and writing, but it can also describe a serious, dedicated follower or student of a teacher or leader.

Sadly the disciple's misinterpreted the teachings of Jesus and now we have Christian zealots that preach the murder of homosexual's and the killing of abortion doctors.
