As a native speaker, which one do you feel more fluent or natural?

I wondered what the children were doing while/ when I was gone.

I think your choice would be the bold one, wouldn't be?

Many thanks

AE-
I happen to use 'while' in a sentence such as this.

"I wonder what the children were doing while I was gone."

1) I wonder what the children were doing while I was gone (better say "...while I was out."). This implies the return home by the speaker.

2) I wonder what the children will do when I am gone. (this implies that the speaker is concerned about her/his children in the event of her/his death.)

While it is fine, but I would say:

I wondered what the children were doing while I was away or while I was out, or while I was at work.

or

I wondered what the children were doing once or after I had gone

Definitely while. We use 'when I am gone' to mean 'when I'm dead'.

I agree with those who choose "while" for your examples.

The difference between "while" and "when" is that "while" expresses a range of time, whereas "when" expresses a particular moment in time.
