Hi,
Could anyone kindly explain to me how should I use the construction of "only as good as" and what does it usually mean.
It confuses me as it seems quite different from the meaning of "as good as" in some contexts.
Thanks for your help :)

'as good as' usually means thas something is being compared to something else in a direct way. It can also mean 'as much as' or 'completely'

'only as good as' is often a way of saying that a person will be judged on what they have done in the past, not what they might be able to do in the future.

In a slightly different vein, and taking into account your avatar:

Even if Di Maria plays at his best, his team can only be as good as its weakest member. Whistle

It is a way of putting a limit on something.

In IMcRout's example, the team is limited by the skill of its worst player.

A common phrase is "A chain is only as strong as its weakest link."

A worker is only as good as his training.
The work is limited by how much training the worker has had.

You are only as good as the company you keep.

Shame on you

Thanks Dragonspeaker, but how should i understand the following sentance:
Critics also argue that commercial genetic testing is only as good as the reference collection to which a sample is compared.
Does that mean commercial genetic is limited by how good the reference collection is?

The bit being missed here is "and not better than" the limiting factor.
You are only as good as the company you keep = you may be as good as them, but no better.

Even the very best commercial genetic testing company/laboratory can only get good results when their reference collection, i.e. their data base of other other genetic information, is good, too.
