Bike Fatalities Up in USAs adults increasingly ditch their vehicles for more eco-friendly and waistline-friendly modes of transportation, more bikes end up on the road, and this isn't all good. Simply put, more biking means more accidents and more fatalities. Between 2010 and 2012, the number of bicyclists killed in motor vehicle crashes in the US climbed 16 percent. The vast majority were adult males, most were not wearing helmets at the time, and a quarter of them were in fact legally drunk. More...

Should be easily offset by the drop in heart attacks and strokes.

In Australia, helmets are compulsory. But then, in Australia we are civilised and also ban gun ownership. USA take note - you live longer with bike helmets and without guns!

The percentage of drunk cyclists is not at all surprising. As sentencing for drunk driving convictions has gotten stiffer, with longer automobile license suspensions, many people who are convicted of DWI end up on bicycles.

Copy/pasted from the article: Quote:Prior research has shown that Australian and Canadian laws mandating helmets for adults led to increased use and a reduction in injuries, the report says. Good onya Ray! & good on Canada too!

Cycling is dangerous enough anyway because of the other idiots. Cycling drunk seems crazy!

They also don't get to work on time and increase the length of their commute exponentially.

Florida listed as a run them over state is No surprise. Ray the Aussie thinks a gun is an evil object. People shoot guns same as crazy Aussies use knives and garrote. America is not a Utopian, Rainbow and Unicorn country we have a Right to Bear Arms...and most of us do. I'm quite expert with mine ;-}
How many Aussie/UK police are saved by blowing their whistle? And can they use knives? Garrote?

Well, what does one expect; men generally are stupid and very seldom think with anything other then their penis/testicles....Sadly there isn't to many remedies' except maybe castration. "Look at me, I'm cool, and very brain dead...."
Of course there is also a real problem with car drivers in general; women that are on their cellphones or putting on their makeup while driving vehicle's meant for off-road use and least we forget the angry middle aged men, that did not get that promotion, et'al. The "love affair" in America with the car has and is continually promoted as a sex symbol while less emphases is placed upon proper defensive driving and/or, correct techniques for driving in adverse conditions. But what would you expect when our education systems are controlled by, at large, very stupid people. Zero sex education and/or real family planning, home schooling; the child is sheltered from the realities of life then expected to go out into the world and become social entities.
Most of us spend numerous hours behind the wheel of very fast machines but only, if ever, had a class in drivers education. Then when it is time to renew that drivers license, you have your eyes checked and pay a fee, and your all set & ready to go out and drive over a bicyclist, that has gotten into your way.... There is one hell-of-a-lot to be said regarding dumb always following stupid, particularly in America.

Opinions are like noses. Everyone has one. It is interesting that some attempt to link guns to bicycles. Everyone has an agenda. Good or bad. Right or wrong. It all depends on ones opinion.

It's much easier to shoot cyclists. They're slower.

How many Aussie/UK police are saved by blowing their whistle? And can they use knives? Garrote? Aussie cops shoot you or taser you to death, but usually only if you're mentally ill or foreign. Aussie's who are not members of the police farce use guns, knives & garrottes, but again, that's mostly on foreign backpackers. See Australia before you die folks!
