It means, in my opinion, that they (referring to "the same people above") hoped to get a place (position) at Harvard, but it so happened that in the meantime some Chinese student in Shanghai applied for the same place online using Internet and was successful, i.e. had taken the place they wanted to take.

Hi!
I think the author is implying that since there are thousands of applicants for Harvard, and only a limited number of applications are accepted, the young chinese student from Shanghai who never even met you has impacted your life, because his application was accepted instead of yours. This is to say that technology has created a boundaryless world where it is no longer difficult for far away people to influence our lives.
