This is going to seem funny, but I have an idea for a Halloween "costume" for myself for work and would appreciate my fellow FD fans opinion about the word "theory":

Can the word "maybe" be considered a synonym?

I've always understood it to mean, essentially, "possible", i.e. "maybe" . In looking it up on FD just now the definition seems to suggest something closer to "accepted fact" in a number of contexts.

I won't reveal my costume idea just yet... I'll share after if it works out.

Thanks in advance!

Dear EllieMae:

Go to this link: http://www.thesaurus.com/browse/theory

There are 48 words listed as synonyms for the word theory. It ranges from argument to understanding and many in-between. If you can't find what you're looking for listed there then I'm not sure it exists. Good luck.

Hi,

Probably you mean the phrase "in theory". You might use it to give a cautious prognosis on a situation or to say that the situation didn't work out as it should have according to "theory", that is your prognosis or estimations. It might be opposed to what has in fact happened by means of a phrase or sentence introduced by the phrase "in practice". And yes, when used to give opinion, it's close in meaning to the words you've mentioned.

Thank you LRai and Gordon,

Although I wasn't able to log in to FD until now, I truly appreciate your replies! I have learned from you both.

I ended up with a different costume -- I was going to do something that was a play on the words in "String Theory"..... Maybe I'll try next year.
Thanks again!
