Charles Atlas (1892)

A scrawny youth, Angelo Siciliano, better known as "Charles Atlas," built up his physique using a system of exercises he developed that worked muscles against each other and in 1922 was dubbed "The World's Most Perfectly Developed Man." Under the Atlas pseudonym, he launched a highly successful mail-order bodybuilding course, advertising his "dynamic tension" system with the now-iconic image of the "97-pound weakling" who loses his girl to a bully at the beach. How fitting, I've not long ago finished the Kurt Vonnegut novel, Cat's Cradle, only to have it mentioned here. Very strange book.

His ads were on the back or inside of almost every magazine us young boys read back in the 1940's and 1950's. This article has brought back some really interest memories today. And; "How does the weakling's story end?" the weakling gets in shape and kicks some ass on the beach.... Ya, right!

well obviously the skinny boy gets te program works out and gets the girl. but its nice to know that advanced warfare, the new call of duty game empasizing bionice exoskeleton suits, got the name of the company, which creates this technology and is known as atlas, in insperation of this man.
