Interesting to read the TFD article about the history and etymology of the word churl, a variant for man of low standing.
The connection with the Latin first name Carolus and German Karl is given, in French and English we have Charles.
What I miss is a hint at the German word Kerl, mostly pejoratve, but not always.
Pejorative: Frecher Kerl! (Cheeky fellow!), Mistkerl! Saukerl! Dreckskerl! (All three: Bastard!).

Also astonishing that the original word gave rise to positive meanings as in the first names
Carolus, Karl, Charles, Charles the Great and very pejorative meanings.

Hi rogermue! How have you been?

I, too, found the TFD article quite interesting. It lead to a good size list of new words that I found in the synonyms section.

The Dog in the River Aesop's Fables: Phaedrus (trans. C. Smart)

The churl that wants another's fare
Deserves at least to lose his share.

As through the stream a Dog convey'd
A piece of meat, he spied his shade
In the clear mirror of the flood,
And thinking it was flesh and blood,
Snapp'd to deprive him of the treat:
But mark the glutton's self-defeat,
Miss'd both another's and his own,
Both shade and substance, beef and bone.

In Icelandic 'karl' still means man, but never took on that perjorative meaning:

karl m ( -s, -ar)

1. (~maður) man
2. (~kyns vera) male
3. (gamalmenni) old man
4. (eiginmaður) husband, '(my) old man'
5. (á skipi) captain, the old man

I have also found that "churl" means a "miser"/ a "niggard", and the example given is "He wss a churl in his affections."

Hello Alice, thanks for asking.
At the moment I'm fascinated by Italian, that's why I'm not so active here.
At the moment I can read Grimms' Fairy Tales, but normal novels are still too
difficult.

As we review the Ebola crisis in Texas, it comes to mind that their governor is epitome of a churl person, but then with him steering the ship, one would expect their "boat", it to run aground.
