Vasco Núñez de Balboa Reaches Pacific Ocean (1513)

Balboa was a Spanish conquistador who, while fleeing creditors, hid on a vessel and wound up in Panama. Once there, he founded the Panamanian colony of Darién, the first stable settlement on the South American continent, and won the friendship of the indigenous people—which was unusual given the cruelty of most conquistadors. Balboa then crossed the Isthmus of Panama and reached the Pacific Ocean, claiming it and all shores washed by it for the Spanish crown. What did he call this ocean? More...

The picture of his execution is just a sensationalist depiction. How do you behead someone seated on a chair with a side stroke? Has this ever been practised? The notes say that he was executed with an axe and that he and his friends were "led to the block".

At that time the name of the Pacific Ocean was "the South Sea"

Hiding in a barrel with his dog. Never meeting his wife whom he 'married by proxy'. Every day was an adventure with this guy. But what happened to the dog?

Same as it ever was...

"As Balboa and his friends were being led to the block, the town crier announced: "This is the justice that the King and his lieutenant Pedro Arias de Ávila impose upon these men, traitors and usurpers of the Crown's territories." Balboa could not restrain his indignation and replied: "Lies, lies! Never have such crimes held a place in my heart, I have always loyally served the King, with no thought in my mind but to increase his dominions." Pedrarias observed the execution, hidden behind a platform. The executioner beheaded Balboa and his four friends with an axe. Balboa's head did not come off clean on the first try; it took three.[citation needed] Their heads remained in public display for several days, as a sign of Pedrarias' might."

The oligarch class increasing their dominions over the peasants via imperial thugs who end up getting taken out ala Night of the Long Knives style.

We never learn from history.
