Yeah, in the long run playing safe is a losing strategy… The best is yet to come, but you must open the door first.

A life lived too carefully is boring. You have to keep one toe over the edge to be able to enjoy the adventures life has to offer in great abundance. A little risk sweetens the pie!!!

Custard is good too, and rarely life-threatening.

Unless my mother made it...

And it also begins with a 'c'.

That quote is much funnier when you substitute 'custard' for 'courage', in my view.

I'm just sayin'...

G.K. was absolutely right, saying that. He also wrote something 'miracles happen, but prosaic people fail to notice them'. I like his wit and ingenuity.

The quote in context :

From, "All Things Considered" by Gilbert K. Chesterton - The Methuselahite

"For, indeed, the weakness of this worship of mere natural life (which is a common enough creed to-day) is that it ignores the paradox of courage and fails in its own aim. As a matter of fact, no men would be killed quicker than the Methuselahites. The paradox of courage is that a man must be a little careless of his life even in order to keep it. And in the very case I have quoted we may see an example of how little the theory of Methuselahism really inspires our best life. For there is one riddle in that case which cannot easily be cleared up. If it was the man's religion to live as long as he could, why on earth was he enlisting as a soldier?"

But you must read this part of the book to understand the meaning of Methuselahism.... Really interesting.

If you awake in the morning your life is at risk. Everyone has a Milk Truck with their name written on it. You just don't know the day or the hour. We were all born to die. So, be brave, be happy, be bold and go out there and be your best self; there by encouraging others to be their best self. After all, life is but a dream.

Have some adventure while young, reap what you have sown, and enjoy the boring life when old.

A boring life is really good life which can only be appreciated by the experienced.

Excellent point and so often true. We tend to honor our "hero's", but to often after their dead.

I think it's not your decision - you ussually become a hero by chance or because someone else picked you to be one. And before you hate the chicken who lived - remember that he's the one to clean the mess.

I must have missed the paradox because I don't see anything contradictory between courage and being a little careless with one's life.

The paradox of courage is that a man must be a little fearful for his life even before being careless of (losing) it.

Or, more elegantly, better a live dog than a dead lion.
