Anna Lindh, Swedish Politician, Stabbed (2003)

Lindh was a Swedish Social Democrat and an important proponent of the European Union. At the time of her murder, she was a prime candidate to become the next leader of the Social Democrats and prime minister of Sweden. On September 10, 2003, she was brutally attacked while shopping in a department store. The assault came just before a Swedish referendum on the Euro, while Lindh was intensely involved in a public campaign for the approval of the currency. When was her murderer caught? More...

Thank you for the article.

I had never heard about this recent incident.

I do, however, remember how shocked I was when Prime Minister Palme was murdered.

Like a lot of other people, I had long thought that Sweden was a paradise.

As an idealistic teenager in the 1950's, I remember envying Sweden's so-called Third Way -- neither communist nor capitalist.

I would devour the books with pictures of happy Swedes living in an orderly, clean, and democratic country.

From recent reports, much of that is, alas, in the past -- especially the "orderly" part.

Politicians have a hard job. We all hate them, & the decisions they have to make. It's a hard job but somebody's got to do it, & no matter how hard they try, it's impossible to satisfy everybody.
I still don't understand the why in this case. Political motivation or mental illness on the part of Mijailović?

After denying all involvement, Mijailović confessed to the crime on 6 January 2004, providing a full account of the events of 10 September in an extra session of police questioning requested by Peter Althin (Mijailović's counsel). He was found guilty in a trial held from 14–17 January, and after a psychiatric evaluation was sentenced to life imprisonment on 23 March. (Wikipedia, 'Anna Lindh')

Progressive individual, Anne Lindh, became a target of a nationalist. Nationalistic pride of any nation is brutal and unacceptable even though some saw European unification as a threat to national identity one way or the other.

SAD DAY IN HISTORY!!

Anna Lindh killer breaks silence over murder:

”I felt hatred of politicians, both Swedish and Serbian. I blamed all my own failures on politicians,” he told Expressen.

”In retrospect, I realise that it was weak to blame their own failures of politicians. It's not a politicians fault that things go wrong for people in life,” he adds.

Later in the interview Mijailovic admitted that he had made up his defence line about hearing voices as a ploy to plead insanity and thereby escape a sentence in a normal prison.

Mijailovic accepts that he will most likely never be released and is prepared for his fate.

”I cannot be forgiven for everything. I will go to hell, when the time comes,” the 32-yer-old concluded.

When we hear of stories like this (the actions of this man), do you think
we are also socially responsible for the way he has turned out to be? Somewhere, down the line, when he grew up, he may have been deprived of various things like, eg, devoid of parental care and love, experienced poverty/hunger, abused in various ways, lack of education etc, etc. Isn't there an underlying reason, why we behave the way we do. Has society failed him?
