Suppose that someone does not have much luck in his life. Whatever he does, something bad happens to him. These challenges prevent him from making his dreams come true.

Here is my sentence.

(ex) Reality ________ him.

Can I use the following words for the blank?

(a) is against
(b) opposes
(c) hinders

Thanks everyone.

I think, all these are possible. I also think the sentence would be better if changed to "The strike of misfortune obstructs him"

If I understand you correctly this is not about reality versus fantasy but about real life.

Shouldn't your sentence rather read "(ex) Life __________ him." ?

That makes sense. 'Reality' doesn't.

I don't see anything wrong with 'reality', so I don't see a need to change it at all.

"In his head he is the hero of every encounter; but usually reality opposes him."

"She's the quintessential absent-minded professor: she's wonderful in the lecture-hall, but reality hinders her.

"She dreams of rising above poverty and becoming a celebrity - but reality is against her.

reality opposes him.
reality hinders her.
reality is against her.

Those sound strange to me. Perhaps it's just me.
