Petrified opinions are usually putrified before they attain the stage of petrification. While clinging to what is truly good, beautiful and useful from the past, one must always live in the present, breaking the chains of human indignity, and freeing human souls entrusted to our hearts and care. It is always good to drop the garbage of the past where it belongs--in the past!

Simple ~~ always simple ... the true scientists are required to suspect petrified opinions.

It is important to differ between petrified and eternal... Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.

"The strange contradiction in personality between the genial humorist and the declared misanthrope has long intrigued commentators and makes Twain a fascinating biographical subject."

He was a declared misanthrope? I loved Huckleberry Finn! So wise, so funny & so poignant.

I am of the opinion that intelligence, alongside nobility of thought and dignity in action, is borne of courage, and courage of the strength of character, which in turn is borne of the righteousness one's convictions and beliefs. Without courage one cannot think straight, act right, or simply be what one is, ethically or morally, supposed to be, without courage the heart remains lifeless and the mind numb. However may you choose to listen in on the perturbed goings on about his soul, never trust a man whose mind and heart is riddled with fear.

How subtly and effectively change the opinions of the ones who succumb to fear and intimidation, how new ones are formed to discard and replace old ones, how fear makes people see differently, is a constant source of fascination to the students of human behaviour. How a predator overcomes when it has its prey pinned under its gaze, who then so intoxicated by the death warrant, would surrender itself to the predator as if upon will, is the fact.

Quote from Mark Twain "Consistency", paper read at the Hartford Monday Evening Club on 5 December 1887.
The Complete Essays of Mark Twain, p. 582
This quote is also engraved on Twain's bust in The National Hall Of Fame.

ON KEEPING AN OPEN MIND
Holding on to an idea that has long since worn through its own logic only serves to dampen the spirit of all who still cling to it.

Regardless I like the sarcastic humour of Mark Twain, in this case I do not fully agree.
It is precisely loyalty to stony opinions of the great philosophers that has dominated the big decisions and resolutions of the world history.
I believe in eternal knowledge and wisdom to achieve the universal balance that is also eternal.

As long as people believe in absurdities they will continue to commit atrocities.
Opinions have caused more ills than the plague or earthquakes on this little globe of ours.
Doubt is not a pleasant mental state, but certainty is a ridiculous one.
It is difficult to free fools from the chains they revere.
Prejudices are what fools use for reason.
The history of human opinion is scarcely anything more than the history of human errors.
Four thousand volumes of metaphysics will not teach us what the soul is.
Our wretched species is so made that those who walk on the well-trodden path always throw stones at those who are showing a new road.
If we do not find anything very pleasant, at least we shall find something new.
Every sensible man, every honorable man, must hold the Christian sect in horror.
Voltaire called Mohammed a "deceitful character." What horrible excesses fanaticism, led by an impostor, can plunge weak minds.
Thank you, and peace.

"...Twain was critical of imperialism in other countries as well... During the Philippine-American War, Twain wrote a short pacifist story entitled The War Prayer, which makes the point that humanism and Christianity's preaching of love are incompatible with the conduct of war..."

I think he was a misanthropic humanist.

That is exactly what good old Zarathustra, Plato, St. Teresa of Avila and other progressive minds told people long time ago, but people still prefer the cave, chains and submission to military-fear-evoking power, substance addiction, porno addiction, and other types of addiction and corruption.

Friendship means understanding, not agreement. It means forgiveness, not forgetting. It means the memories last, even if contact is lost.Sick
