Handshakes Out, Fist Bumps and High-Fives In?

The handshake has been the preferred gesture of greeting, parting, congratulating, thanking, and sealing a deal in many cultures for some time now, but, in the interest of health, it may be time to loosen our grip on the handshake and take up "pounding it" or high-fiving instead. Shaking hands transfers 10 times more bacteria than fist bumping, while high-fiving falls somewhere between the two on the bacterial transfer spectrum. Still, none of these options is completely sterile, prompting one infection control expert to make the tongue-in-cheek suggestion that we reinstate bowing and curtsying, thereby eliminating hand contact entirely. No way to stop this. It's just plain rude not to accept a handshake.

We are so concerned about bugs! And our immune systems consequently are becoming increasingly inadequate as we slather on the anti-bacterial goop indiscriminately. In times past, children ate dirt--often covered with E. coli bacteria, from the barnyard. Strangely they did not get sick. But now, we have to protect everyone with hand sanitizer! We are dooming ourselves to becoming immunologic weaklings!

I hope that infection control guy sterilised his tongue before sticking it into someone's cheek.

Whats a person to do...danged if you do & danged if you don't...how about the "old" fist with the thumb up or down...really not a greeting but an approval and all stores do not have automatic door handles.d'oh!

The handshake is extremely important to our society. Peace treaties have been promised over a
handshake. Wars have been ended by a handshake. Great business deals have begun because of a
good handshake. Make sure you follow the tips above whenever you shake someone’s hand. A
good handshake is a first impression that will last a long time in person’s mind.

Yes - it depends on the situation. Amongst friends it is mostly fist bumps. At a business meeting of unknowns - shake that hand and wash it later.

Step outside of the box Brick wall. We are talking about changing our culture here, not following the norm.

How about basic hygiene to eliminate any hazardous bacteria from incidental contact, and stop freaking out about harmless bacteria that exists everywhere?

I stopped steralising my baby's bottle when I found her sucking on the sole of my riding boot.

Just having a little chuckle to myself, my friends doing high fives and knuckle bumps.

To each his/her own.
