HIV Reemerges in "Cured" Child

A US-born toddler who, it had been hoped, had been cured of HIV after receiving antiretroviral treatment within hours of birth is, sadly, still infected. Tests had found no detectable levels of the virus in her blood as recently as March, despite the fact that she had not received treatment for nearly two years. Earlier this month, however, the four-year-old had a positive result. The news of the failed cure comes as a blow to the research community and indeed society at large. More...

I must say that I had my doubts about it from the beginning. Sounds a little too easy for me. It is nevertheless very sad.

Yes, but that particular case is not the optimal research case - she was away from the programme and not on any treatment. So the conclusions you can draw are more complicated.

The top causes of HIV seem like indulgences, but no child deserves to suffer like that.

HIV was never eradicated in the first place. Even though HIV-positive patients are living longer lives today thanks to antiretroviral drugs, they are still not entirely impervious to developing AIDS.
