I find the synomyms extreme and misleading. When something is deplorable, it is usually, shameful, dirty, disgraceful, wretched, etc but not criminal or vicious.
For example: The state of your bedroom is deplorable. (messy, dirty)
His behaviour was deplorable. (shameful, disgraceful)

"Everyone" says that Prime Minister Maliki is responsible for the deplorable situation in Iraq today.

Instead of being a patriot who ruled the country for all groups -- the Kurds, the Shia, and the Sunnis -- he has kicked out the Kurds and the Sunnis from government and army jobs.

He is now begging the United States to save him. (Some people say that it is similar to corrupt South Vietnamese leaders who had to depend on American help to stay in power).

Some people think that the United States should "invite" him to leave Iraq for (comfortable, of course) exile.

I'm in total agreement TheParser and an appropriate use of 'deplorable'. I'm listening to the news to see if anyone is going to come up with some pearls of wisdom but I am most pessimistic that anything good will happen there. The entire area is a 'deplorable' mess. Is there no longer such a thing called enlightened leadership? Civilians will continue to suffer and bear the brunt of sectarian hatred. How utterly tragic!

Has there EVER been enlightened leadership?

Has history not always been one muddle after another?

After all, leaders are human beings, and you know what human beings are like!

Here in the United States, many doctors would disagree with Ms. Woolf.

Many Americans are simply not getting enough sleep.

If they really want to experience the "joy of life" for many years, people need to get adequate sleep.

This means, of course, not staring at the TV or computer screen for so many hours each day. (Besides, it's probably not good for one's eyes, either.)
