Cable News Network (CNN) Begins Broadcasting (1980)CNN, a division of the Turner Broadcasting System owned by Time Warner, is widely credited with introducing the concept of 24-hour news coverage. Today, the network reaches more than 1 billion people in more than 200 countries. Its coverage of the Gulf War and other conflicts and crises of the early 1990s, including, perhaps most famously, the "Black Hawk Down" incident in Mogadishu, Somalia, led to the coining of the term "the CNN effect." What phenomenon does the phrase describe? More...

The term "the CNN effect" is used now to describe the perceived impact of real time, 24-hour news coverage on the decision-making processes of the American government.

Poor CNN has fallen on hard times: almost no one looks at it -- except when there is "breaking news."
"Everyone" was laughing at it recently because it was devoting almost 24 hours a day to the missing airplane in Malaysia.
But CNN did not care that people were laughing. Why? Because it was attracting a big audience of people who were intrigued in the disappearance of that plane.
When CNN started, it was the top dog of cable news because there was no competition.
Today, there is also FOX NEWS -- which is a bit more conservative (right-wing).
There is also MSNBC -- which is very liberal (left-wing). One of our comedians compared MSNBC to the Democratic Party!

Many of us old-timers will always remember CNN broadcasting from Beijing in 1989 when the Chinese soldiers moved in to crush the pro-democracy students in Tiananmen Square. All of a sudden, the picture went out: the Chinese censors had closed down the broadcast.

CNN is thinking of every way possible to regain its popularity. For my taste, it is a bit too much of a bleeding heart in domestic news (always showing programs that are meant to generate sympathy for certain groups). But when it comes to international news, CNN is still the champ!

The CNN effect : The alleged ability of the media (particularly television news) to arouse public attention and compel government action, as can be seen in the case of Somalia, in Mogadishu One of the key events is the downing of a pair of UH-60 Black Hawk helicopters (Black Hawk Down) and the subsequent attempt to rescue their crews. At first, the general public were emotionally moved (owing in part to media pressure), and defended the intervention. It was to meet the public’s expectations that the United States acted. When the same general public, however, saw the images of fallen soldiers in the streets of Mogadishu and in particular the loss of 18 Rangers in October 1993, they changed their minds and demanded that the troops be withdrawn. There is a saying in the United States about this: “CNN got us into Somalia, and CNN got us out”. http://www.e-ir.info/2011/08/11/the-cnn-effect-and-somalia/

I've never heard that saying mona but it sounds plausible.
The US media threw off the yoke of objective honest journalism some years ago, exchanging truth for social, political agenda having become an elitist tool of mass manipulation.

Absurdicuss should've written:
