Hybrid Vehicles

A hybrid vehicle uses multiple energy sources—or propulsion systems—to provide its motive power. Typically, these sources are gasoline and electric batteries. Hybrids have become especially popular in recent years, as they provide greater fuel economy with lower emissions and are thus more environmentally friendly than traditional internal-combustion engine vehicles. What makes hybrid vehicles a greater safety risk to pedestrians and cyclists than conventional vehicles? More...

Several automakers developed electric vehicle warning sounds designed to alert pedestrians to the presence of electric drive vehicles such as hybrid electric vehicle, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and all-electric vehicles (EVs) travelling at low speeds. Their purpose is to make pedestrians, cyclists, the blind, and others aware of the vehicle's presence while operating in all-electric mode.

Even electric vehicles still make noise. These anecdotal 'incidents' have been more about trying to make electric vehicles seem dangerous than anything else. If you are in a city at a busy intersection you will not likely be able to hear a gas or electric vehicle until it is right next to you. The ones you will hear are the diesels and other trucks.

Batteries are recycled, which has also driven down the replacement cost of them for older models.

Noise or information?
Generally speaking traffic sounds are
thought of as noise.

However we all make use of the
information transmitted by the sounds.
Fully sighted pedestrians also use the lack
of noise to choose the right time to cross
(without looking).
Cyclists may interpret a lack of noise as
the right time to change lane, or as a sign
they can relax because no vehicle is
approaching from behind.

And even EV's make noise when they move along the road.

The smaller gas engines in many of the better quality vehicles today make very little noise.

It is when these low noise vehicles compete with trucks and SUV's that they are drowned out. The difference being that when a gas engine vehicle sneaks up on a pedestrian, the pedestrian doesn't run to the media and say small gas engines are a safety hazard for pedestrians. However, if that same pedestrian has an EV sneak up on them, it's in the news across the country as a major safety issue.
