Flores de Mayo

Flores de Mayo ("May flowers") festivals take place throughout the Philippines during the month of May. Children create offerings of flowers and bring them to their churches in the afternoon. Parades make their way through towns and villages, with girls wearing traditional costumes followed by their relatives and friends singing Hail Marys. The festival ends on May 31 with fiestas everywhere. In big cities like Manila, Flores de Mayo is one of the largest festivals of the year, featuring May Queens and fancy dress balls. More...

The Catholics deified Mary long ago as a demigod. Once while touring the St. Lawrence Basilica I asked the priest there about praying to Mary. He said "we pray to her because no decent son would refuse his mother's request."
"So you're muscling Jesus with mom" I replied, and we both had a bit of a chuckle.

St. Lawrence is a beautiful site to see in Asheville, NC, USA. Here's a you tube link: //www.youtube.com/watch?v=O7TutdKQvAk

Flores de Mayo, as the name suggests, is held on the month of May. Literally meaning the flowers of May, this nationwide festival commemorates the search of Queen Elena of Constantinople, together with his son, Emperor Constantine, for the actual cross carried by Jesus. Among all the fiestas, this comes nearest to the format of a beauty pageant, as the parade consists of maidens escorted by young men under floral arches. In many areas, it is also considered a ritual for the coming of age of young ladies.
