oppress

(verb) Come down on or keep down by unjust use of one's authority.

Synonyms: crush, suppress

Usage: If you are a tyrant by nature, the temptation is strong, I allow; but no generous mind delights to oppress the weak, but rather to cherish.

I first came across this word in a poem at school called 'The Cow and the Ass':

"...
A cow quite oppressed by the heat of the sun
Came here to refresh as she often had done
And standing quite still, stooping over the stream
Was musing perhaps, or perhaps she might dream..."

For many months if not years, I believed only the scorching sun could 'oppress'.

Some countries have such oppressive Internet laws that if you type in the words "democracy" or "independent judiciary," nothing will come up.

May God bless you with discomfort at easy answers, half truths, and superficial relationships, so that you may live deep within your heart. May God bless you with anger at injustice, oppression, and exploitation of people, so that you may work for justice, freedom, and peace. May God bless you with tears to shed for those who suffer from pain, rejection, starvation, and war, so that you may reach out your hand to comfort them and to turn their pain into joy. And may God bless you with enough foolishness to believe that you can make a difference in this world, so that you can do what others claim cannot be done.
