It means don't
*Blame the wrong person (it's the piano that's out of tune)?
*Punish or criticise excessively somebody who is trying
*Criticise (bad) art.

Oscar Wilde visited Leadville, Colorado in 1882 and gave a lecture at the famous Tabor Opera House. Afterward he was taken to a "dancing saloon" where Oscar remarked "I saw the only rational method of art criticism I have ever come across. Over the piano was printed a notice: "

"Please Do Not Shoot
The Pianist
He Is Doing His Best"

Pig farmer during the day and saloon pianist at night. What do ya' expect? :)) If the chicken farmer played better but the saloon owner prefers the pig farmer's style, then you are free to shoot the saloon owner. Definitely not the pianist.

It means Oscar was playing the piano [badly] and preferred the Russian judge keep his opinion to himself.

That would be a satisfying thing to do Drool If you have worked the messenger hard enough, like they did to the guy who brought news of Greek victory to Marathon a long time ago, he shoots himself.

Artists are the best critics. :-) How true his words ring!

he was tring to warn the reader in a metaphorical way: he is the pianist, and his music is his writing.

Usually he states what he thinks in an "arrogant" way, i mean, it's sufficient to think about the aforisms, or his view of the figure of the artist(as for aestheticism), that's to say: the artist is the one that can understand the true meaning of art and give the other (normal peaple) a way to interpret it.
He has the same function of a messiah, and probably everyone would feel uncomfortable with it. With that phrase he's defending himself from any critics, trying to reorganize his position towards his public, becoming closer to it.

Thanks for giving us the context of the quote, Christine.

I'm not entirely sure what his idea of "rational art criticism" was. To me, it seems like it could have been the act of shooting the pianist, or simply the presence of the sign informing everyone that the pianist was mediocre but was doing his best. I prefer the latter.

Yes, the important thing to do is to be a good decision maker. Be practical in your decisions. Be wise. If it all results down to which place to wipe myself first, than that is to be more reasonable. Always do your best, and never feel that your attempts were worth being shot.
