Commonwealth DayFrom 1903 until 1957, this holiday in honor of the British Empire was known as Empire Day and celebrated on May 24, Queen Victoria's birthday. Between 1958 and 1966, it was called British Commonwealth Day. Then it was switched to Queen Elizabeth II's official birthday in June, and the name was shortened to Commonwealth Day. In Australia it is celebrated as the Queens Birthday weekend and is usually the second Monday in June. This year it will be the 9th. This gives workers a long weekend(3 days off), a great opportunity to go to the snowfields, or, to do a spot of fishing.

Since this celebration was cooked up the year the old Queen died it must have been in commeneration of her death. At least the people who finance the whole operation get a day off with pay. I guess we Americans have the equivalent of Presidents Day.

In Canada, it has become the 24th of May or Victoria Day Weekend. In recent years, the younger set have come to start calling it May Two-Four with reference to the fact that lots of cases of 24 beers are used at parties celebrating the opening of cottage season and it's the 'first long weekend of summer'.
