With the little help of TFD:

"A population is a summation of all the organisms of the same group or species, who live in the same geographical area, and have the capability of interbreeding."

Talking about humans, population usually means the amount of people living in some specific country. India's population is now some 1.2 billion. If we talk about India's demographics, we go to quantifiable subsets of that population, like the ratio of men and women; the amount of Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, etc; the amount of speakers of each of those roughly 700 languages; and so on...

"Commonly examined demographics include gender, age, ethnicity, knowledge of languages, disabilities, mobility, home ownership, employment status, and even location."
