All men are by nature equal, made all of the same earth by one Workman; and however we deceive ourselves, as dear unto God is the poor peasant as the mighty prince.

The inequality comes from the desire to be better than other people, instead of being better than ourselves. Pure illusion.

We aren't in any way equals though, as humans, share some common characteristics.

I especially like your thought Guto. In the eyes of God we are all the same but often we think we are somehow different and so we use stereotypes to create the illusion.

I think I will make this quote as my handmaiden. Guta deepen and expanded Plato's wisdom by sugguesting that competition is good but only if it is directed against oneself. I found that competiton to be invigoriating when I was using weights. I pitted myself against my previous record of reps, cetainly not an increase of weight.

That's amazing what this man wrote 400 years BC and I like the way he thinks about god as a creator of everything, I do agree that humans are equal but not absolutely equal as the sign of equality (=) means, I would rather say that God is fair towards his creatures.

The trouble is, Plato was no egalitarian. Instead, he was, temperamentally at least, an aristocrat. You only have to read The Republic to see that.

Sometimes being poor or sick can be gifts from god, you'll find this relative equality if you believe the fact that god is fair, so the things God gave you compensate the things you lack and so on... you can't decide whether someone is happy or not with what he is (or what God made him be)

Is he saying equal opportunity, different outcome? And we're only equal in birth and death?

I wonder if anybody knows in which book Plato supposedly wrote this.
I couldn't find this source on the web. I found instead comments it might
have been falsely attibuted to him.

Thank you, Capitán, for my first spontaneous laugh of the day. I am still smiling. Mr. Colt did indeed make all men equal so long as one is toting one.

Does anyone think that by "equal" he meant entitled by natural law to live unimpeded, free from harm, to pursue the course to happiness which best suited her/him, and that all human life is of equal value?

All, except non-citizens, women, and slaves, as the Athenian democracy would have it. Plato himself was not exactly a fan of democracy:

""Democracy... is a charming form of government, full of variety and disorder; and dispensing a sort of equality to equals and unequals alike.""

to youme

If starting conditions were the same (all men are by nature equal, made all of the same earth by one Workman), then we were the same for few thousand years as pancakes from the same dough by one Cook.

God did make Man equal, but Man pulled the plug on himself. How far down the sewer he went depended upon his desire to fight against the effluent and upon the compassion of others able to help him.

Over a thousand years have passed and we still haven't gotten it right! Our American constitution made the idea a cornerstone, yet equality still eludes us. What is it about humans that makes it so hard to just accept this and move on?

That sounds remarkably Platonic.
Oh, Mira… define "equality", please.
