Miep Gies (1909)

Gies was one of five heroic Dutch citizens who helped hide Otto Frank, his wife and daughters, and four other Jews from the Nazis during the occupation of the Netherlands. After the hidden Jews were betrayed to the Gestapo in 1944, Gies took Otto's daughter Anne's diary, and kept it—unread—in hopes of someday returning it to her. After the war, Gies gave the now-famous diary to the only surviving member of the family, Otto. Why did she later say that had she read it, she would have destroyed it? More...

The Diary of Anne Frank has been published in more than 60 different languages!

Gies did not read the diaries before turning them over to Otto, and later remarked that if she had she would have had to destroy them because the diary contained the names of all five of the helpers as well as their black market suppliers. She was persuaded by Otto Frank to read it in its second printing.

How many of us would put our lives and freedom on the line for a group that has been effectively smeared by the media directed from the ruling paraty? As history has demonstrated the truth of the Hitler's contention that a lie so "colossal" that no one would believe that someone "could have the impudence to distort the truth so infamously" has certainly been shown to be fact: the lie becomes conventional wisdom. Yet Miep Gies resisted conventional wisdom and guarded the Franks, the Van Pels, Fritz Pfeffer, and many others besides who remained nameless. I wonder is she and her husband Jan is on the Israel's Righteous Among the Nations Honorific?

It is an intriguing aspect of human nature to believe and hold to tremendous lies and then proceed to order ones thinking around the many layers concocted to support the truth of the lie.

Many even bigger lies are hidden in plain sight for all who are willing to see.

The world needs heroines like Gies. I revere her bravery and love of life truth and honor.

Like you Marguerite, I too hope that her name has been lovingly placed in Israel's ring of honor.
