billet

(verb) Provide housing for (military personnel).

Synonyms: canton, quarter

Usage: The citizens who were forced to billet soldiers in their own private homes were understandably irritated by the imposition.

That was very surprising, when I billeted the chief-analyst for the Afgan project.

My personal Word of the Day example:

"Antediluvian American army billeting (1) was primitive. During wintertime, the soldiers loaded billets (2) into the potbelly woodstoves to maintain heat in their living quarters. This is how the lieutenant explained his conditions in a quick billet (3) he mailed home to his parents."

(The timeless mnemonic technique: "Use it in a sentence!")

I served in the Army for many years and often had billeting provided, but my best billeting was when the "Base" had no rooms and they gave us off base accommodations. Once while returning from the war in Bosnia, I had a layover in Germany and I need a billet. They reported that there was no room and that I would have to stay at a Gasthaus (a German-style inn or tavern with a bar, a restaurant, and hotel rooms) I resisted because I felt that they should have saved rooms for us returning veterans. I gave in and reluctantly rented a car, drove to the Gasthaus and "had the best time of my life." The food was amazing, the beer was great, the company magnificent and the bed had a down comforter. I never resisted off base housing again.

A billet-doux for an anticipated billet-doo-doo.

Better a billet than a bullet.
