Chaireas, there are many people, and I think jmax is one of them, who consider 'Y' to be a consonant, even though it may be pronounced as a vowel in many words.
Although I do not share this view I think this is perfectly legitimate - not that any native speaker would need my legitimation.

I came up through the British school system, as was jmax, I suspect, and we were taught that there were five vowels and all the rest were consonants.
