People of intelligence and achievement can nonetheless be so greedy and lacking in integrity that they gamble their reputations by breaking the law to further their own ends.

I can't work the bold part out. Could someone please explain it to me?

It means that people who are greedy and without integrity are willing to violate the law to achieve their selfish desires. They will act like a criminal to get what they want.

The idiom 'breaking the law' has been explained, and you may already know it. It is the other two meanings I guess are giving you trouble.
