Hi everyone:)

I saw this: '...You'll come off as a professional and confident.' in a column of a newspaper.

Is it grammatically correct? Is 'come off' a rare expression?
Also, I feel 'confident' have not used correctly here since it is an adjective.

Thanks for clarifying:).

Hello, Meredith:

I believe that "to come off as" is NOT rare here in the United States.

Excellent point about "a professional [noun] and confident [adjective]."

Maybe the problem could be solved by removing the "a":

"You will come off as professional [adjective] and confident [adjective]."

It is quite a common expression in BE, although more informal

You will appear, give the impression of being.....

You are right about the adjective.

Because they say 'a professional' it is a noun, and you cannot use it in a list with an adjective.

They should either have used two adjectives

You will come across as professional and confident.
[This is the most natural version]

Or, two items separated by a comma, so you can 'reset' the sentence and start again with a new part of speech.

You will come across as a professional, and confident.
or
You will come across as a professional, and a confident interviewee.
Frankly, the noun 'a professional' is unnecessary, and does not sound good. It is more likely that that 'a' is the mistake, or typo, in the original (or your reading of it) and that both are adjectives.
