The people of the world have many superstitions, but one in particular is shared by a number of cultures, especially those of the Mediterranean and Middle East: the evil eye. Traditions and beliefs surrounding the evil eye vary, but it is generally thought to stem from envy and malice toward prosperity and beauty. In some cultures, yet, those who admire and praise prosperity and beauty--far from malice--would fear the bad omens of casting the admiring eye.
To prevent the bad omens of any excessive generosity from their admiration they spit three times upon the subject, mostly adorable babies or healthy
farm animals.
