Someone said this to me. I didn't know how to respond to it.

What would you say to this? Thanks.

They are a waste of time in the same way that reading a book or watching a TV show or movie is a waste of time. If you enjoy it, then what's the problem? It's just a matter of opinion.

First, I would Google "video games intelligence" & read the spate of recent articles associating video-gaming with cognitive gains. Then I would try to find out how the person who put them down wastes his or her time (or how they wasted it when they were your age if there's a difference).

One option is to direct them to a study such as this one, that suggests playing video games improves motor skills and cognitive ability.

It may be a waste of time, but so are a lot of other things. It is indeed a matter of opinion. As long as it doesn't interfer with the rest of your life, what is the problem?

It is almost guaranteed that whoever said that to you wastes his/her time in some other way.

I myself like playing video games, I do think that it may be a waste of time but if I am having fun, then I reached my goal. I'd rather be playing a game than hanging out with drunk idiots at the local pub.

^This is not a diss on anyone who enjoys to hang out with drunk idiots at the local pub, it is merely to show that fun and wastes of time are in the eye of the beholder.

I went to a local pub only to find out that all the local idiots I usually waste my time chatting with had been far too drunken and sent home. The rest of the evening I spent playing video games with politically correct bartender who liked to discuss about linguistics.

Everything is relative. If you're playing video games instead of finishing that term paper that's due tomorrow, or skipping school to go to the video games parlor, then yes - it's a waste of time.

But as the other poster said, if it's something you enjoy and some other more important part of your life isn't suffering for it, then go for it! One of my favorite movies is "the Last Starfighter". Who knows? Maybe you, too, have the magic.

that's awesome! Dancing

and on second thought, though I don't play with that purpose, video games can help train your patience and analysis skills. Or even eye-hand coordination.

Government run schools are worse than a waste of time if you ask me.

Tell this someone that A) you already know B) they are cutting into your video game time, and C)you know how to kill them with a paperclip now that your brain has warped into that of a violence and sex crazed psychopath (which I'm sure would be the next argument after "waste of time".

It's unfair to say that video games are all a waste of time, because not all games are equal. Some action games improve reflexes and concentration. Some roleplaying games have well-developed stories. Some puzzle games are intellectually stimulating. And some MMOs exist more for their communities than for the game itself. Yes, hours spent level grinding are wasted, but that's hardly all there is, and even that time is still fun to some people. Who doesn't occasionally waste time having fun, on video games or not? It's better than stress.

Video games increase the dopamine levels in the brain which is better than gambling and eating which also increase these levels.

I moved on to the 3d modeling/modding process after getting tired of certain aspects of the gaming culture in of itself.

Could you clarify what you mean here? Are you saying video games increase dopamine levels more than gambling and eating, or that video games increase dopamine levels so one doesn't have to gamble or (over-)eat? Or am I missing the mark entirely?

I would retort that for someone to say video games are a waste of time, they would have to be blind to many aspects of the game, including (but surely not limited to) the art, problem-solving, and intricate story line. I would tell them that they are fallaciously generalizing. Then I would proceed to paste their brains to the wall, because I play too many video games.

Hello Everyone,

I find the statement "Playing video games is a waste of time" as a contradictory one as every activity we take up adds something to our knowledge and experience. Everything has got an essence. But over indulgence in some activity is not good also as it will buy time out of other activities which might be of more importance.

I used to think video games were bad until i began the understand the feelings of orders and how much relief these games can offer and comfort others in time of need.

I usually find that the people who tell me that video games are a waste of time (because I do "waste" a fair bit of time playing them) are trying to manipulate me into doing something I don't want to do. Like going out clubbing, drinking, or something else I'm just not into.

If you lock yourself in your room 24/7 to play... you probably have a problem. If you play during time that you would be wasting in other ways then I don't see why some people have issues with it. I can only watch so many Law and Order Criminal Intent reruns between 10 pm and 1 am.

Certainly you must have picked up some good bunkmaking and ironing skills. Or maybe you got those in the first 8 weeks.

I remember an unusual billboard a few years ago that said, "Must every minute be productive?". It was an advertisement for a gaming console. Unusual because you just don't see these things advertised on billboards, but at the same time a catchy slogan that I am still able to remember.

To me, it reinforced my Free Cell addiction, but it also makes a point about our cultural imperative to be working at all times unless sleeping. Surely a balanced life has time in it for work and play, in appropriate measure.
