Thus it may be known that the leader of armies is the arbiter of the people's fate, the man on whom it depends whether the nation shall be in peace or in peril.

The problem is that for some twisted folks, being of "the arbiter of the people's fate" work as a narcotic, stimulant of provocative nature not as a warning sign.

It is no coincidence Daemon selected this quotation in light of the turmoil in Egypt. Will General Sisi become "the arbiter of the people's fate?"

"Canis canem edit." (Dog eat dog.) In fact, cannibalism is rare among dogs. Time for attorneys from the Canine Defense Fund to bring a lawsuit for defamation and injunctive relief?

Bully_rus, good comment. In the same chapter, Sun said, "There is no instance of a country having benefited from prolonged warfare." And right before Daemon's quote: "In war, then, let your great object be victory, not lengthy campaigns." A military should not exist for its own sake. The Roman Republic gave an appointed dictator unlimited power but only six months to use it.

MTC, Egypt is different matter. We shouldn't wish military rule on the people of Egypt, but we also shouldn't care if an illiberal democracy is ousted. I hope that Egyptians can get themselves away from both. The measure of a government is the protection of the rights of all persons, including those in the minority.

Interesting, the juxtaposition of peace with peril. Leaders of armies and nations have yet to learn that war is a great peril.
