Balaam is an Old Testament diviner whose story appears in the Book of Numbers. He was asked by Balak, the king of Moab, to curse the Israelites as they approached Moab near the end of their 40 years of wandering. The Israelites had already defeated two kings in their travels, and Balak feared he would be next. According to the account, when Balaam opened his mouth, he was only able to bless the Israelites. Aparently, curses are more that just words in the bible.
Words have power, especially when they come from representatives of god
or from people whose hatred against god or his servants led them to utter such words.

I remember one passage from the bible in which some boys
were making fun, mocking Elisha, god´s prophet, because of his bald head.
Elisha then turned and looked at them, cursing them in the name of the lord.
Immediately, two she bears came out of the woods and mauled forty-two of them.
(2 Kings 2:24)

Well, I guess god is quite susceptible to words.
and doesn´t tolerate children that much.
