Because imitation is suicide of your development.
PS Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

In other words envy is the inability
to realise or to acknowledge one's
own failure.

Emerson wove many colorful quotes into his essay on Self-Reliance. Here's the surrounding patch from which today's snippet was taken:

"There is a time in every man's education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide; that he must take himself for better, for worse, as his portion; that though the wide universe is full of good, no kernel of nourishing corn can come to him but through his toil bestowed on that plot of ground which is given to him to till. The power which resides in him is new in nature, and none but he knows what that is which he can do, nor does he know until he has tried." (http://www.emersoncentral.com/selfreliance.htm)

And a few more:

"Trust thyself: every heart vibrates to that iron string."

"Whoso would be a man must be a nonconformist."

"A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by little statesmen and philosophers and divines."

"To be great is to be misunderstood."

The memorable list goes on...

Ironically, Emerson himself has become one of the marbled "bards and sages" whose words men rely on rather than on the "gleam of light which flashes across (the) mind from within...."

I think that envy is the acute awareness of others superiority. The nobleman gladly admits it but the wretch trembles from rage.

If only it were that easy to explain envy, put it to the account of ignorance, or that education cures it before the envy breeds and morphs.

And there is nothing more alarming and dreadful than ignorance in action.

Moreover; "Envy is an insult to oneself."
