I sometimes wonder if this is because there is so much deception in people, that we are constantly "reading between the lines", and fail to recognize the truth when it is lying before our eyes.

In many of my interactions with people, I am aware that people are "scamming" me when it is totally unnecessary, because I am dealing with them honestly and generously. I think one expects that one is going to be "scammed" and so proceeds to set up the dynamic of trying to "out scam you". I often see the surprise in a person's face when one realizes this.

I think we are so conditioned, from our bad experiences, to attempt to protect ourselves, by trying to outwit our assumed adversaries. This saddens me, because it makes me feel like I did when was a child when I was pushed, by a ring of neighborhood children, into a girl older then myself with one arm (the other arm had a kind of hook for a prosthesis)in order to fight her. She immediately began frantically hitting me with her hooked arm. Years latter, I actually stood in line behind her at a grocery store as she checked out bottles of soda and shuddered, remembering the horror and fear I saw in her eyes, as I kind of stood there in a frozen trance, that still haunts me to this day. She did not remember me, and she actually nodded and smiled at me in a pleasant way.

But, of course, there are still those people who, no matter how fairly or kindly they are treated, still will attempt to lie, steal, rip you off--hurt you, take advantage of you, or defame you in some way, no matter how good you are to them.

Why don't you write about your experiences, Miriam? The one you just recounted would be a good candidate.

MTC: I'm not really sure what you mean. Do you mean: write about things in general that have happened to me, my life in general?
