Weight Bias Goes Both Ways

Despite their extensive medical training, doctors are not immune to the stereotypes and stigma related to obesity. Previous research has shown that medical professionals routinely stereotype overweight patients, and a new survey shows that patients judge doctors by their physiques as well. Respondents in a recent survey said that they are less likely to trust or follow the advice of a physician who is overweight or obese. Considering that about half of the doctors in the US fall into these categories, this sort of weight bias could have significant and widespread consequences. More...

I can see why people wouldn´t trust a doctor who doesn´t seem to take much care of his or her own health.
They tell you to take care of your body, but if they seem to have weight problems or smoke heavily,
then the patients might think that it´s not as serious as they thought and remaint stoic with their issues.
So I guess doctors aren´t really helping the patients with their image in that way.
Don´t you think so?

By the way,
I know that weight problems might be congenital sometimes,
but people don´t even think about that for even a second.
A doctor´s image is quite a serious matter.
The doctor is supposed to inspire confidence,
security to his or her patients after all, right?

I remember my doctor ( who is a great guy and friend ) suggesting, from every fibre of his 300 pounds, that I could lose a few pounds. I fixed him with a steely eye and said " Physician, heal thyself.".

Since when he has largely glossed over my weight at our biannual meetings...
